Reconnection, inspiration, and why is the rum always gone?

This week, I think we've been more social than we have in, I dunno, years. Except maybe for the weeks we lived in the Kiwi household, and we were kind of forced into happy sociability, just because we were part of a family and you have to talk to family at dinner. In the past week since my birthday, we've seen friends that we've (I've) missed for the past two years, and even friends not spoken to since college. It's been nice. Really nice. This is what I missed: the talking to people who understand, who know on the level of a decade plus of friendship behind us, and the ones who can now laugh at the fact that I didn't give them the damn rose from Medieval Times on their 16th birthday (Kristy, I'm looking at you).

There's nothing that brings dorks together than dorky conversation, whether it's books or tv shows or discussing why Star Trek: Nemesis apparently sucked donkey balls, as per several 'knowledge experts.' Geeking out over Pythons and Disney trivia and Lord of the Rings was something we didn't get a lot of chance to do in En Zed, probably because our social circle included the Kiwi family and my one friend from kickboxing who doesn't speak to me anymore (Kate? You there?). So, yeah.

Except, when you talk to such friends and they tell you about the JET program for teaching English in Japan, and we figure out that I could go and Tim could come with me on a special visa and maybe even work, and then we realize there's two weddings we really can't miss next August and October. If it wasn't for step-brothers and high school friends, we'd be in Japan now. You owe us. So, yeah, reconnecting as adults is somehow a little more meaningful, especially when you can look past all the petty differences and the squabbles, and the fact that you might've thought someone was an over-opinionated prick in high school.

Hmm. No real point to this post, just the fact that I'm glad we're all friends again, and if you're coming to the Halloween party, RSVP, for cripe's sake. Otherwise, you're on notice.
